FIND A GOOD HAIR STYLIST

Finding a good hair stylist can be a daunting task. Especially if you're new to the area. I've listed a few tips on how to find the best hair stylist who may suite your hair glamour needs.

1. Referrals are the best way to find a good stylist.
You've seen her work and obviously liked it. Go for it!

2. Get Referrals from someone who has a similar look to what you desire.
Ex..If you want a short haircut, look for that in your referral. Same as hair color, hair cut, long hair, hair extensions, hair weaves, and more. It's just that simple... Got it!

3. Bring a photo to your appointment.
If you know what you want, it helps to bring a photo of your ideal style, color, cut, etc.

4. Ask a cashier, co-worker, shopper, or wherever you may see someone with gorgeous hair.
Women are always willing to share their stylist contact info.

5. Go to a salon to observe.
Ask a girlfriend if you can go with her to her next salon hair appointment. You can observe away without feeling awkward or out of place and it won't cost you a dime. If you like what you see, get his/her business card before leaving.

Tape Extensions

Hair Extensions- A Girls Best Friend! Or is it?

There are many methods of applying hair extensions. These methods are as varied as hair extensions themselves. Some hair extensions are attached with clips, while others are attached with glue (keratin) or tape. Although, hair extensions vary in many shapes, forms and methods, many would argue that glued in extensions are the most detrimental.

Let's take a look at each method beginning with clip- on extensions. Clip- on extensions are great for anyone who wants a quick fix that they can manage on their own without the help of a professional stylist. Clip- on's can be ordered online or at local beauty supplies. One of the greatest benefits to clip- on's is that they're convenient.their convenience. You clip them in when needed and snap off when ready to remove. They do not require any special instructions, tools, or knowledge because they are self- explanatory, so you just place them where needed. The disadvantage is that if the clips are constantly worn daily and are clipped in the same area on your hairs, your hair can become worn and thin in those particular areas. Average Cost $50+

Tape extensions are wefts of hair that has been pre- taped on a thin skin- like strip. This type of extension actually requires a professional to strategically place them in the correct format for to achieve optimal results. The benefit to this type of extension is that its is more permanent but and can still be easily removed. Most people who wear tTape extensions usually have them installed for a special occasion such as: a wedding, vacation or, party, etc.. The downside is that if not properly removed, you can experience some hair breakage. Average Cost $300+ for installation. Hair product sold separately

Fusion Extensions are pre-tipped hairs that are bonded to your own existing hair, several strands at a time. A licensed professional who has been certified in this technique is/and should be well sought after for proper installation & removal. The benefit of fFusion eExtensions is that they can last between 4-6 months with very little maintenance in between. The downside is that if the bonding isn't properly removed, clients can experience hair breakage. I find this process to work best on normal to oily hair (less longevity)  because the hair has some lube which serves as a protection barrier . Average Cost $400+ for installation. Hair product is usually sold separately. The hair product is sometimes included in larger ticket prices.

In my 17 years of experience in working with women's hair enhancement techniques, I've come across the good, the bad and the ugly. To keep yourself from finding out the hard way what the bad and ugly look like, do your research.

  1. Always have your hair extensions done at a professional salon by a licensed stylist.
  2. If your stylist is certified in hair extensions, that's always a plus
  3. Referalls are always a good way to find the right stylist to apply your extensions.
  4. Ask your stylist, how often should you come in for regular maintenance. This will ensure that your hair remains in good health.
  5. Always inquire about longevity. In my opinion, extensions should be removed within 3-5 months. Anything longer than that just gets ratty, detectable, and unhealthy for your hair.
  6. Ask your stylist if the process is safe for your hair. If not, ask about other options for increasing volume and length that are a better fit for your hair type
  7. If shopping for the cheapest price ticket, be prepared for the outcome. If it turns out to your expectations, then you've done well.
  8. Never have your hair done for the very first time one day before going on a vacation. Timing is everything. You may need to the have your hair tweaked within the first week of application; Whether it's having a shorter cut, shaped, thinned out, more hair added, or better blending, it's better to be safe than insecure.

Just like with hair chemicals such as perms, relaxers, other hair straighteners, and hair colors requires proper maintenance, so does all types of hair extensions. There is a price to pay for beauty and it's called, "MAINTENANCE." If the shoe fits, continue wearing it. If not, opt for clip-on hair extensions or wigs.

Many women wear hair extensions for various reasons. However, there are those few who would never dream about wearing hair extensions or any other hair attachment (regardless of how bad they may need it) because they are either a low maintenance people, do not think it applies to them, or just do not like the concept of "FAKE" hair in their head.

I've listed benefits that may be an eye opener for most non-hair wearers. These reasons may make you  slip into the trend and realize that wearing hair is not such as bad thing afterall.

10 Reasons for wearing hair extensions that I've heard from clients over the past 20 years.

  1. My hair is thin and skimpy
  2. My hair will not grow to a desirable length
  3. I have a bad haircut and need to wear extensions until my hair grows back
  4. I do not want to bleach my hair, so I prefer to add extensions for hilites
  5. I need to camouflage my bad hair color.
  6. I need something different for a special occasion such as a wedding or holiday party.
  7. I'm going on vacation and want to look different
  8. I'm bored with my look, but do not want to make a permanent change to my existing hair

How to style and cut a hair weave!

Friends should not let friends wear too much hair!

Ok- So, last night while I was standing in the checkout line at best buy, I couldn't help being entertained by the cashier's excessively thick eyelash extensions that came with a matching head of extremely big hair. This was obviously a lace wig. How did I know? Number one- I have a trained eye, Number two-As I got closer I was able to identify it by the fake part. Ladies, if you're going to wear hair weaves or lace wigs, please try to keep it as natural and realistic looking as possible. Whether you or a friend have applied it and do not know how to tweak the cut to make it look like it's at least growing from your own head, seek the help of a professional weave artist. Anyone can attach a weave or wig to your head that's straight out of the package. However, not everyone can design it in such a way that it looks like your own hair. All weaves and wigs should be customized. They should not be sewn on, flat ironed, and left for embarrassment. You've already spent at least two hours of sewing. Take another 30 minutes to customize the look. "I'm just saying!"

I've listed a few suggestions to finish off a weave or wig that will help you or your stylist (friend) keep it as real looking as possible.

How to style a weave or lace wig

  1. On average, 4-5oz of hair will do if your wearing a full head
  2. A thin weft is advisable to give the hair a nice light flow without compromising fullness
  3. Finish the cut with a razor to soften the ends as opposed to blunt scissor cut
  4. Nine times out of ten, the weave will always need some thinning to customize it to your desired look
  5. Never feel like you have to use the entire two packages purchased just to get your monies worth. That's one less package you will need to purchase for your next weave.
  6. FYI, each packages of hair is usually four ounces.
  7. The hair around the face should always be lighter in weight than the back of hair.
  8. Color blend and cut blending are crucial when trying to achieve a natural looking head of hair. If one of the two are off, your secret is exposed to the world.
Practice makes perfect!

Note: I searched the internet for ridiculously thick weaves and couldn't come up with any pictures. The model in this photo may be sporting her own hair, but I needed to show an example of what too much hair looks like if it were a weave or lace wig. Koodos to her if its her own :)

On the flip side, I do sell customized hand-made hairpieces for anyone whose looking to achieve a light weighted, natural looking head of hair without the bumps and bulk. My customized hair pieces will not compromise your look and are cut and styled to perfection.
